Meet the artist

BETH ALICE RUBENSTEIN

She describes herself as a MOD*POP*Folk artist who’s addicted to creating things to make people smile. Her studio is a laboratory where she produces a wide variety of fun, quirky and colorful designs including acrylic paintings, Café Society characters, Art Brats paper dolls, Quilthead pillows & magnets, Artsee post cards, and “Ms. Behavin’ in Reno” scenic postcard books. Exceedingly happy themes and original quips & quotes run rampant throughout her work and will appeal to all ages.

She has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan where she grew up. As a nurse she worked in oncology and her cheery disposition was appreciated by many terminally ill patients. Her passion for painting developed through the years and wasn’t in full swing until moving to Reno in 1996. “Many people put their artistic skills on the back burner and never get to fully embrace their capabilities. It’s never too late to do the things you want to do. Even though I got a late start in life, thanks to my supportive family, I finally found the time and energy to concentrate on my studio art.”

When she donates her work to auctions and fundraisers it is a particularly gratifying task. She loves the challenge to meet deadlines for art groups, organizations and charities. “Long before I was a working artist, I remember the thrill of attending charity art auctions and finding great one-of-a-kind pieces that seemed to be made just for me. I truly appreciated the artist that donated work to a good cause.”

Just ask her friends or anyone who has spent time with her in the studio. She has a reputation as a serious painter who has prolific and versatile talents. “I want my work to be art you can live with…something special that you take home with you. If I have a following it’s with people who have enjoyed the sense of humor in my work.”

She is gaining popularity through local shows and she knows she must be doing something right because colleagues keep inviting her back. In Reno, you will find her art at La Bussola, a Riverwalk Gallery and she is one of the Artouring artists seen at the Nevada Museum of Art. She donates to charitable events & auctions such as the American Heart Association, VSA Arts, Sierra Arts Foundation, RSPCA, Saint Mary’s Foundation, Nevada Women’s Fund, A Rainbow Place, The Lear Theatre, KNPR, Friends of the UNR Library and Art4Auction at the Nevada Museum of Art.
